Beef and Broccoli in Black Bean Garlic Sauce

I’ve seen dishes with black bean sauce on plenty of Chinese menus, but haven’t cooked with it before at home. I wasn’t sure what to expect and initially was worried that it might be too spicy for my kids.

I needn’t have worried, the sauce is savory with just a hint of sweetness, it is delicious, and my kids love it.

Slices of beef are marinated in garlic, ginger and sesame oil then stir-fried along with colorful veggies in a savory, slightly sweet, black bean garlic sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 pound beef sirloin boneless rump tips, sliced (~¼ thick slices)
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided (for stir frying)
  • 1 small head of broccoli, cut into florets (about 2 cups)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced thinly lengthwise and then cut into 1-inch long pieces
  • 8 oz package sliced mushrooms
  • 4 tablespoons Black Bean Garlic Sauce (I use Sun Luck brand)
  • hot cooked rice for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together cornstarch, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and sesame oil.
  2. Add beef to bowl and toss to coat. Let beef marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Heat one teaspoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan, add broccoli to wok and stir fry for 3 minutes.
  4. Remove broccoli to a bowl and set aside.
  5. Add another teaspoon of vegetable oil to wok, add in onion, red bell pepper and mushrooms and stir fry for 2 minutes
  6. Add beef and black bean garlic sauce to wok and stir fry for an additional 3 minutes or until beef is cooked.
  7. Return broccoli to wok and mix to combine.
  8. Serve stir-fry mixture over hot cooked rice.

Oh I so need to try this. I have been wanting to add sir fries to our weekly menu but I’ve not had much success with the sauces. Usually they are too sweet for my hubby and my son is just starting to appreciate Chinese food. I’m trying this for sure. I’ve not tried the black bean sauce yet. Can’t wait to try it.
